Hello again everyone and welcome back to Standish Dog Trainer’s newsletter. I hope that you have all had a good start to the New Year and are enjoying the spring time. For me the big event of the year was Crufts. The biggest and best dog show in the world (in my opinion). Crufts generally runs every year in March and has done since 1928 – with a break from 1940–1948, due to the war! If you are a dog lover / enthusiast then a visit is an absolute must, if only once in your lifetime. Crufts runs for four days each year at the NEC in Birmingham. The days are split into groups, Toy & Utility, Gundogs, Working & Pastoral and finally the Terrier and Hound group. Alongside the showing of the breeds of dogs there are also competitors in agility, obedience, flyball and heelwork to music, stalls filled with doggy merchandise, rescue organisations, dog food manufacturers, phew – the list is endless! Sarah & I left chilly Standish at 7am on the Friday (gun dog day) and arrived at the NEC by 9am! We had a look around the various stalls, watched the judging of the Springer Spaniels (those of you that know Sarah know that she is a big fan of the old Springers). We then had a good look around Discover Dogs, which is amazing – there is an example for pretty much every dog that you ever heard of and quite a few that you haven’t. It is a brilliant exhibition and credit is owed to the breeders and breed enthusiasts that take the time with their dogs to be there, and be ambassadors for the breeds. My friend Dawn was at Crufts this year showing her German Long Haired Pointer, so we stopped to wish her good luck before going to the main arena to watch 4 hours of heelwork to music, agility, flyball, the Golden Retriever Display Team and so much more. We both had numb bottoms but it was worth it! The day was fantastic, Dawn won a red rosette in her class (first place!!), well done Dawn! We had a great time checking out all of the doggy merchandise, we both spent quite a few pennies, we saw Guide Dogs, PAT Dogs, Hearing Dogs, Dogs for the Disabled, Police & Army Dogs, Mountain Rescue Dogs – just how flexible and clever our four legged furry friends are! Dates for Crufts next year are Thurs 5th – Sun 8th March – see you there!!

What’s New? Paw Plunger This invention is truly inspired! Paw Plunger is like an enormous beer mug, with a soft rubber top with a hole in and soft rubber bristles inside. You fill the plunger with water and after a walk, you ‘plunge’ dirty paws inside, give them a bit of a scrub and twist, which removes the mud & bits from your dogs paws. Genius I think – check it out at www.pawplunger.co.uk. Canix Canix is a new sport designed for dogs and their owners together. Canix is cross country running with your dog. We saw this demonstrated at Crufts. Again a fab idea! There are no special requirements or training involved in this, it is for anyone that would like to run with their dog. It is advised that the humans are aged 10+, and the dog 12 months+ as running can be quite a high impact sport. You are attached to your dog with by way of a waist band, fixed to a long lead, fixed to a harness on your dog. Then you just....RUN. There are Cainx events taking place at various events & locations through the year, with varying trails, from 1.5 miles to 3 miles over varied terrain. Seems to me like a great idea – exercise for you and your dog, keeping fit, healthy and happy together. If you would like to learn more about Canix, check out www.canix.co.uk. Please do get a vet check up to make sure your dog is fit to run and start of gently!

Class News Classes are busy and bustling as always. We have had a steady flow of puppies and dogs since the new year, with some lovely characters and hard working owners. With the class of Feb 08 we managed to get outside to practise our recall, which was fantastic, there were rosy cheeks and big smiles on the faces of owners and dogs alike. Classes for April are full now, so we are taking bookings for advanced and basic classes starting on 7th June 2008. Come along for a look if you haven't been before, and past clients, please do pop in and say hi. Well folks, that’s all for now. A big thank you to all of you for your continuing support and interest. Keep the photos of your dogs coming in as I love to see them and am slowly working on a gallery page for the website. Enjoy your dogs, have fun and don’t forget to reward them when they do a good job for you. All the best, keep in touch. Jo PS. Any feedback gratefully received! Just email me.
