About Me
|
Adele called me when her Great Dane puppy Tonka was 18
weeks old. He was a really nervous puppy - frightened of literally
everything other than Adele and Amber. Adele wanted to solve this
problem before Tonka got bigger and more difficult to control. The first
time I met them all, Tonka did a very good job of hiding behind Amber and
it became apparent that we would have to train them separately. On
our first session Tonka, Adele and I made it into the front garden and met
the postman. Adele's aim for the week ahead was to get him to the
first lamp-post along the street! With positive, upbeat praise and a huge
amount of patience on Adele's part, over the coming weeks, Tonka made it
further and further, getting more confident all the time.
Amber was not used to wearing a lead, when she did she
was strong enough to drag Adele anywhere that she wanted to go, making it
impossible for Adele to walk just one dog, let alone both dogs together.
Within one training session, Amber learned that pulling would not get her
where she wanted to go, in fact quite the opposite, every time she pulled,
she was stopped. By the time we had completed two heel-work training
sessions, Amber was walking beautifully on a loose lead, stopping at the
kerbs, and walking calmly across on command.
Using consistency, positive reinforcement and patience,
Adele now has her wish, to walk out with her dogs, completely relaxed and
in control. A great result! |
